Searched Census To Identify Harriett And Her Three Children

Searching From What’s Known

Harriet’s future husband, Elias W. Bartlett Sr. was listed with his first wife, Rachel on the 1870 Missouri Census in Carroll County. Question: Where was Harriett and the other three Bartlett children who were born before the 1870 census was taken?

On November 7, 2022, I began to search for Harriett on the 1870 Carroll County Missouri census. I searched for every black Harriett born in Missouri around 1849 and one by one, I looked to see if there were key names in the same household. Those key names were her Grandmother Hannah and three children, Sallie, Charles, and Lucy.

The Newest Discovery

Actually, this is an old discovery that became new once I saw it again. I came across the household of HESLIN before. I didn’t see the connection then. But, the second time around, I was filled with joy when I saw the names Hannah, Harriett and Sally, Charles and Lucy. This was confirmation.

Harriett BARTLETT’s and her three children’s ages were similar to the 1880 census. However, Hannah was listed as born in North Carolina on the 1870 census at age 80. But on the 1880 census Hannah was born in South Carolina and her age was at 115. This is 35 years older in ten years.

I believe that this Harriet, her children and her Grandmother, Hannah are the ones that I’ve been searching for. They were listed with William HESLIN born in 1810 in Kentucky. He who was head of house. Hannah B. HESLIN born in 1790 North Carolina.( Note that Harriett had a grandmother by the name of Hannah HOOPER on the 1880 Missouri census in Carrollton County Missouri.)

It appears that Elias W. Bartlett Sr. was not the father of Sally, Charles and Lucy. This would make sense, if they weren’t listed with him on the 1870 Missouri census. It appears that the three children took the Bartlett surname. I wonder what were their surname?

What’s Next?
Ironically, I can’t locate the family with the Heslin surname on the 1880 census for Carroll County Missouri. I’m wondering. Is there another way to spell that surname? Could Helsin have been their enslaved surname? Also note that I have found Sally, Charles and Lucy were listed as mulatto on other records.

Sarah “Sallie’s maiden name was Shaw. This came from an Ohio 1919 marriage record of Myrtle Younger, daughter of Sarah “Sallie”. The Shaw name is something to look into.

Crop photo of the 1870 United States Federal Census For Harriet HELSIN, Missouri, Carroll County.

Questions And Wonder:
Who was Harriett ( BUFFINGTON / HOOPER BARTLETT?
She was my Great Grandmother, Harriett. My father’s David’s grandmother.
I wonder if Hannah could have been Harriett’s great grandmother.

The Mariah HELSIN was born in North Carolina in 1830. She was Williams’ daughter .
Was William HELSIN Hannah’s son?
Or if Williams’ wife was Hannah’s daughter?
Wonder if Sophiah, Harriett and Allen were siblings?

I wonder if Hannah’s surname was Buffington?
Listed as Hannah B. HELSIN on the 1870 census. Harriett’s maiden name was listed as Buffington on her daughter, Lucy’s social security application in 1939.

Week 8 ~ Amy Johnson Crow #52Ancestors in 52 Weeks ~ Generations CafĂ©

The theme for Week 8 is “I Can Identify.” Genealogy research is about identifying the correct people to attach to our family trees. Who have you worked hard to identify? Another way to interpret the theme would be to highlight someone like my grandfather, who could spot (and correctly identify all kinds of mushrooms. (My sisters and I never got the knack of doing that!)

Great Grandfather Elias W. Bartlett Sr. ~ Brick Wall #52Ancestors In Week 21

During the 1980’s, I began searching for my family connections. While I was searching, I came across the name of my Great Grandfather Elias Bartlett listed as the father of my Grandmother Jennie (Bartlett) Lyles’ 1926 death certificate. I though, the name Elias, sounded like he didn’t have a first name.

As I continued searching, I made some inquires to the Carrollton County Genealogy Society about my Bartlett family. In reply, a lady from Carrollton, Missouri sent me copies of the 1870 and 1880 Missouri census records listing Elias’s household in Wakenda, Carroll, Missouri.

On the 1870 United States Federal Census,
Elias was listed with his first wife Rachel and their children who carried the Bartlett surname:
William born in 1852 and Warren born in 1854
John born in 1855 and Fanny born in 1859
Lena born in 1862 and Harriet born in 1865

On the1880 United States Federal
 Census,
Elias was listed with his second wife Harriett , children and a grandmother;
Sally born in 1865, Charles born in 1867, and Lucy born in 1869.
Elias Jr. who was born in 1879.
William (who was a widow on the 1880) was listed on the 1870.
Grandmother, Hannah Hooper was born in ca 1765 who living with the Bartletts.

In November of 2022, I located Harriett with her three children on the 1870 Missouri census.
Sally was born in 1865, Charles was born in 1867 and Lucy was born in 1869 and
Hannah was born in 1890.
They were listed in the HELSIN Household with the HELSIN surname.
I don’t think that HELSIN was the surname of Harriett and her children along with Hannah.

I’ve been back tracking the sources on Elias W. Bartlett Sr. his wife Harriett and children.
Records of Elias’ were from...
1870 and 1880 United States Federal Census For Carroll County in Missouri
The December 29, 1876 marriage recorded of Elias BARTLEY married Harriet HUGHES.

Daughters’ death records:
Jennie LYLES in 1926 , Juanita ARMSTRONG in 1929 and Lucy HORAN in 1940.
Lucy’s father was listed as Mr. Bartlett. However, he was her step father.

Crop photo of Juanita BARTLETT ARMSTRONG’s 1929 death certificate.

It’s still a mystery to what happened to Elias Sr. Could he have passed in 1900 in Carrollton, Missouri?

Some of the Bartletts moved to St. Joseph, Missouri. Unknown to what brought them there.
Lucy was married in St Joe in August of 1900.
Paul was living there around 1900 according to his 1956 obituary
Jennie was living there in 1902 according to her marriage record.

Even though the Bartletts were listed on the Missouri census in Carrollton, Missouri in June of 1900, they moved to St. Joseph sometime after the 1900 census was taken. There was a Elias Bartlett listed on the 1901 city directory in St. Joseph, Missouri. It didn’t stated if he was a Sr. or Jr.

There was an Elias W. Bartlett Jr. listed in the city directory in 1904.
Elias Jr. moved to Oklahoma City around 1906. He was listed in their city directory.
Harriet was listed as the widow of Elias Sr. on the 1905 city directory.
This was the first mention of Harriet in St. Joe.
I believe that Harriet was in St. Joseph the same time her son Paul was in 1900.

Hoping for information:

I believe that there is still hope in finding some things about Elias Sr. and Harriet. I’m waiting on information on the death notice of Elias Bartlett who passed on October 7, 1920 in Oklahoma. Also, I came across Elias Jr.’s name as Eli BARTLEY and Elias BARTLEY in the Oklahoma City Directories.

I wonder. Could the family surname have been BARTLEY or perhaps BARTLE?
Jennie’s maiden name was spelled BARTLE when she married John BLAKEY on July 28, 1902 in Excelsior Springs, Clay, Missouri.

Elias W. Bartlett Sr. life is still a brick wall, along with his family listed on the 1870 census.

I wonder. Was Elias, Alex Bartlett? This was the father’s name on Paul Bartlett’s 1936 social security application and claims index information. I’m hoping that there will be more clues in the years to come to uncover the Bartlett family mysteries. Someone may have the pieces to this mystery.

Even the maiden name of Harriett is a brick wall.
Was her maiden name HOOPER, HUGHES, HELSIN, FISHER, or BUFFINGTON? I’m thinking that it was BUFFINGTON source from Lucy’s 1939 social security application and claims index information.

The theme for Week 21 is “Brick Wall.” ~Amy Johnson Crow #52Ancestors In 52 Weeks Challenge

Do you have an ancestor (or 4) who you can’t seem to make any progress on in your research? This would be a good week to write about that ancestor and really think about what you know about that ancestor, how you know it, and where you might look to fill in the gaps. Writing is part of the research process!

Learning Some Things And Making Some Discoveries.

It's been such a beautiful start of the first full week of March.
The Sunday Message: The Jesus Revolution.

Enjoy the last week of the changing of the clock America.
Daylight savings time is Marc 12, 2023

My Last Week's Pass Time.

I continue to do my normal dos. My challenges and checking up on things.

RootsTech was on March 2 - 4, 2023.  There was so much to learn through the classes online. I have to go back and check on some of them.

Through the Roots Tech conference, I learned some things. The key thing is to have questions and to slow down on my search. Go one by one to search out what I'm searching for. Focus on that thing you're looking for.

I discovered that I am 13th cousins to Queen Elizabeth II and Diana, The Princess of Wales are my 13th cousins. President George Washington is my 6th cousin three times removed. Elvis and Lucille Ball are my 10th cousins.

I don't know how RootsTech and Family Search does their search on who's related.  What I did, I built my family tree on on Family Search from what I know about my lineage. Then I added my what my DNA matches from Robert Berry Lankford and Susan Munday's  linages.

Gifts From God

When it snows, it brings beauty to land and all that surrounds it. It's a beautiful. I normally take pictures when it snow. But, photos don't do justice in which the eye can see. The view is like stepping into another space. When I see this. I'm left to admire the view in the moments of  time that I take to look.

I can see God as an artist. All He creates to beautiful. I enjoy looking at nature. The skies and the land are set in our display for a purpose.

Goals For The Week
Daily devotional, journaling , reading, meditation
Do what I need to do and what I should be doing and do my best to keep on track.
Post my blogs for week four themes: Education and A Family Member
Rest, relax and have fun

I'm thankful for the people God places in my pathway. I believe that God brings people into our lives for a purpose. We learn from one another. May we see that those who are around us are gifts from God. And  our lives are a gift from God. All good things come from God.

The Sunday gathering message It's All A Gift It was a good sermon.
"It’s all a gift—all of it. Being, creation, your life, forgiveness, immortality, and the final promise that at the end of all things God will be all in all—it’s all a gift. "

Eleven weeks to go to enter into my next decade.
I'm thankful that life is a gift from God. And all that God has given us is a gift. Live life in love.

A Good Day To Journal

 We have a snow day.
And it's piling up very slowly since 11 am. They say, it will be about 4 inches when it's all said and done. I hope it's not too  bad outside.

It's been a fun day.
I did something that I haven't done in years. I'm glad that I got to go. I might do it again sometime. It was so fun. All I had to do was to show up. And just be.

I'm changing up some things next week.
I was thinking. I'm don't need to blog everyday on this site. I'm future posting on my Challenge blogs on Saturday. I'm thinking about having blogging days for this yet.

Sunday is a good day to journal.
Sunday is the first day of the week. Saturday is a good day as well, as it is the last day of the week. The week days are the ones that I'm looking at for some changes. I have two blogs that are only once a week.

I did look through some of the DNA matches.
I didn't see any connections. I tend to forget to check my other DNA sites. I will have to get with it.

I'm getting ready to watch the NFL.
This will be a game to watch.  And it's snowing in Kansas City, Missouri. I'm rooting for the Chiefs.

Making A Way To Keep On Track

I got thrown off track this week. I'm not worried. It's good to not to be so serous about goal keeping. I'll making a way to get back on track.

It's my 13th year on Twitter. I joined on January 20, 2010. Things have changed over the years. I have less people I know that clicked on to follow me. I have 88 people listed on my my list. I'm on Twitter less over the years. I'm in and out and future post a lot.

I created other new accounts. It's like I really need them. Oh, the password keeping, I have. I can always create another password.

What are the benefits of doing some things? I see that I need to let go of things to make room for the new things that are coming. I've been doing less of what's draining me. I'm putting my energy on the things that bring me energy.

I'm working on my Saturday blog with the theme of FAMILY. I have another theme for #52Ancestors  EDUCATION. I may change what I started. The prompts get me to thinking. Then again, I post what I have.

Thanks for reading.
I'm making a way to keep on track.

Focusing On My Goals.

It's a cold windy day. It even snowed some. However, its gone now. I'm use to the changes in the Winter weather. I pray that the rain or snow don't turn to ice.

I finished In Remembrance on the Isaac Dade / Dayd lineage. I did add his lineage on another calendar along with the sister, Crieldy (Dade) Green lineage which is about  four people. Isaac didn't have many as his brother, Benjamin Dade.

There's one thing I forgot to share about Benjamin's lineage. I came across cousins marrying cousins. I got confused who was who. Benjamin's descendants were marrying into his sister, Louisa Dade Washington's lineage. And Louisa has a lot of descendants.

I'm into listening to podcast. I'm learning some new things. I'm hearing the phrase: A Better Me in 2023. I'm focusing on my goals. I doing my best to keep moving toward them.

On This Cold And Rainy Day

It's a cold and rainy day and a good day to stay inside.  I have done some of  my dos for today. I have set my goals. And I'm moving right along. There are things that I won't get done today.

I finished up on Benjamin and Lucy (Sampson) Dade In Remembrance list. I didn't include the living family members. I did have a chance to go back and list the spouses. I'll move on to Isaac Dade / Dayd lineage.

I have re read my blog: The Tombstone Of Chas Langford: Out Of Place. It is set to post this afternoon. I will post it on my Susan Blakley:  Family Connections page as well. Charles Edward Lankford / Lankfard was my great uncle. My Grandfather Leo' s brother.

I feel as thought I accomplished a lot today. That calendar on Benjamin and Lucy Dade's lineage is filling up. I may need to do Isaac Dade Dayd lineage on another calendar. I forgot about if I find more on Benjamin's lineage and even the living ones who will pass. I will have to add them.

I'm working on Isaac Blakey And His School Of Life: Education blog for next week. We always write of the education of those who went to school. Why not those who weren't educated through the school method. What about the School Of Life?

80 days to go till my next decade.

Good Day

I continue to work on my In Remembrance list for the descendants of Benjamin Dade Sr. and Lucy (Sampso) Dade. They have a lot of descendants. I had to take a break on Eliza "Lizzie" Dade Calsaw.

I'm adding more of Benjamin and Lucy Dade's lineage as I'm adding to my list on the calendar. I didn't think to do this until I got to Eliza Dade that I completed today I'm adding living relatives to the Family Connections tree.

I have two more Dade children to go; Brandy Dade and Charles Dade. I have finished with George B. Dade, Fanny (Dade) Cottell  Martha (Dade) Carter,  Eliza "Lizzie" (Dade) Calsaw. I'm not for sure if  Mary Dade and Benjamin Dade had not off springs.

What I am doing is time consuming. And I see that this is a good thing in the long run by adding the list of names on a calendar. I'm seeing that relatives has to same birth and death dates this way. .

I finished up on my blog: The Tombstone Of "Chas Langford": Out Of Place. It's set to post tomorrow. I may come back and re read it. I continue to wok on next weeks' theme: Education. My goal is to write shorter blogs.

 It's been a good day.

Set Time To Start And Stopping Point

We're half way through January. The high today is going to be in the 50's. Yesterday, we had a cold wind and I saw people out and  a bout without a coat or jacket. There were people golfing. Some were at the parks.

I've been working on my #52Ancestors challenge for this week and next week. Week three theme is Out Of Place and week four. theme is Education. I have week three about done.

I'm doing my best to keep up on my routines for each day.  I have to know which days are my most productive day in doing things. Those days are Sundays and Thursdays.

I've been changing things up to get things done. It's good to have a set time to start and stopping point. I have to leave some things for next time.

I had some extra time. I was recording in remembrance dates on a calendar: the descendants of Benjamin Dade and Lucy Sampson Dade. Out of the eight know children, I have five of their children's off springs listed on my calendar. I have four more to go.

My Strength And My Song

It was a beautiful Sunday. I enjoyed the view on the way to (and fro) the Sunday gathering. I'm thankful for those who stopped to chat with me. Christ Be All Around Me.

Sunday is always a long day in the making for me. I continue to learn how to balance this day. I do like being out and about on Sundays. And now, I'm finally settling down.

I continue to keep up on my journaling. But, I'm trying not to journal too long. I checked my DNA matches. I wasn't as long on social media as I am on Sundays. I'm slowing down more.

The Sunday Gathering:
The message was Jesus Christ Is The True Lens Of Scripture by Pastor Brian Zahnd.

The first two questions that's on the discussion small group for this message.

1.) What was the first Bible you received or purchased for yourself?
My first Bible I received was by Word Of Life Church, I responded to an alter call on September 17, 1993. and received the paper back cop of the New King James Version. I was a first time visitor as well.

The first Bible I purchased for myself, cost me  $1. I ordered it through the mail in the late 1980's or early 1990's. It was the hard copy of The Revised English Bible. I still have both Bibles.

2. ) Do you have a favorite Bible verse? If you have memorized, share it with the group.
The Lord is my strength and my song,

 and he has become my salvation;

this is my God, and I will praise him,
my father's God, and I will exalt him.
Exodus 15:2 (ESV)

Thanks for reading.
My Strength And My Song

My goal for the week
I'm listing some of my blessings for this week.
I'm listing my bees that bring discouragement.
I'm thinking of why are these discouragement so?
And why do I return to them?

I will focus on the good of things.
And pray about what distracts my thinking.

I have 83 days to go to my next decade.
I came to Jesus to be my LORD in 1983.
This March 25th will be my 40th Anniversary!

Blessings.

A Week Of Surprises And Some Fun

Today, I was on the go doing my daily dos. Some relatives came over. We had some food.  We watched TV.  We had a good time in conversation.

I was out and a bout with people. I went to get my hair done and went shopping. I have been enjoying this day. It was like a day that came about as I was going.

Yes, it's been a wonderful week. I had other guest who came by besides the one just happened to be in the neighborhood. There was two relatives who came by and we received communion together.  We had a nice too.

I'm into reading up on the news on my cellphone and computer. The newspaper came by mail carrier yesterday. The paper appear to be smaller. The paper cost was $3.25 per copy. I don't pay that much. I'm a subscriber.

I thought to change up some things along the way. My goal is to journaling everyday. I see this as a good thing for me. It has been clearing my thoughts. And it's giving me some new ideas to do.

I'm getting into journaling more. It's good therapy. I been journaling on my "On My Journey" I posted that before this one. I'm learning not to make my blogs long.

I don't know if anyone is reading what I'm journaling. It's a practice for me to keep my mind active and doing something. Perhaps some day, I will come back and re read what I was doing back in the days.
